The short version
A lot of roofs that look past it are not. They are dirty, the coating has worn off the tiles and the mortar on the ridges has cracked and dropped out. Underneath all of that the tiles are still sound. That is exactly the roof a restoration is for.
A restoration is the full treatment of an existing roof rather than a patch. We clean it back, repair or replace the broken tiles, rebed and repoint the ridge and hip capping, and seal and recoat the whole thing. The roof comes out weather tight and looking like a different house.
It is also the single biggest change you can make to how a property presents from the street. If you are getting ready to sell or you have just bought something that has been neglected, this is usually the job to do first.

In detail
What is actually in a restoration
High pressure clean to take off the moss, lichen and years of grime, and to expose anything that has been hiding underneath it.
Broken and slipped tiles replaced, then the ridge and hip capping rebedded on fresh mortar and repointed with a flexible pointing compound.
A sealer coat to bind the surface of the tiles, then colour coats rolled or sprayed out to an even finish. Gutters cleared and the site cleaned down at the end.

It is not just cosmetic, although the cosmetic part is the bit the neighbours notice.

- Loose and broken tiles dealt with, and the capping put back on fresh mortar instead of what is left of the old stuff.

- Even colour across the whole roof instead of patchy, chalky tiles and dark streaks of lichen.

- Sealed tiles shed water instead of soaking it up, and sound pointing keeps wind driven rain out from under the capping.

- A roof that was heading towards replacement gets a long second life instead.

Is my roof a candidate for restoration?
If the tiles themselves are structurally sound, almost certainly. If they are brittle, porous or cracking across whole sections, we will tell you honestly that a replacement is the better spend.
How long does a restoration take?
Most homes are a matter of days rather than weeks, but it depends on the size of the roof and the weather. Coating needs dry conditions, so we work around the forecast.
Can I choose the colour?
Yes. We will go through the colour range with you when we quote.
Do I need to move out?
No. It is all external work. You will hear us up there and there will be a vehicle in the driveway, but life carries on inside.
