The short version
The bedding is the bed of mortar the ridge and hip capping sits on. It is doing structural work: it holds the capping in position along the top of the roof and carries it over the gap where two planes of tiles meet. When it crumbles, the capping has nothing to sit on.
Bedding fails for ordinary reasons. Decades of heat, cold, movement in the frame and water getting in behind it. You see it as capping that rocks when you touch it, mortar dropping into the gutters, or whole lengths of ridge sitting out of line.
Rebedding means lifting the capping off, cleaning out what is left of the old mortar, laying a fresh bed and setting the capping back down into it, straight and true. Then it gets repointed over the top. Done properly it is the difference between a roof with twenty years left in it and a roof with a leak that nobody can find.
Call Aaron on 0427 149 270 or send through the details and we will come back to you.
Worth knowing
Signs the bedding has gone
Most of these you can spot from the ground or the gutter without getting on the roof.
- 01 Mortar in the gutters
- Grey crumbs and lumps collecting in the gutters and downpipes after wind and rain.
- 02 Capping that moves
- Ridge tiles that rock or lift when they should be solid.
- 03 A ridge line that is not straight
- Capping that has dropped or shifted so the ridge no longer runs true.
- 04 Visible gaps under the capping
- Daylight or dark voids where the mortar bed used to be.
- 05 Leaks along the ridge
- Water finding its way in at the top of the roof, often showing up in the ceiling well away from the ridge itself.
What it looks like
When the bedding underneath has gone
Bedding mortar is what the ridge and hip capping sits on. It takes the weather and it takes the movement of the roof, and after enough years of both it cracks, crumbles and lets the capping shift.
Once the capping is loose the pointing goes with it, and from there wind driven rain gets in under the ridge. Rebedding puts the capping back down on fresh mortar so the line sits straight and solid again.
Bedding is the part of a roof that fails quietly. Nothing looks wrong until something is.
Straight answers
Roof rebedding: your questions
Not covered here? Ring Aaron on 0427 149 270 and ask.
What is the difference between rebedding and repointing?
Rebedding is the mortar bed underneath the capping, which is the structural part. Repointing is the flexible compound over the top that seals the joint. Rebedding almost always gets repointed afterwards. Repointing on its own only makes sense if the bedding under it is still sound.
Can you rebed just one section?
Yes, if the rest is genuinely sound. We will tell you what we find rather than quoting the whole roof by default.
Does rebedding fix a leak?
If the leak is coming in at the ridge or hip, very often. We will confirm the source during the inspection rather than guessing.
