The short version

Pointing is the visible line of compound along the edge of the ridge and hip capping. It seals the joint between the capping and the tiles, and it is the part of a roof most exposed to UV and movement. On an older roof it is usually the first thing to go.

Old pointing was mortar, and mortar is rigid. A roof moves with heat and cold every single day, so eventually the mortar cracks, lifts at the edges and starts falling out. Once there is a gap, wind driven rain goes straight under the capping, and from there it is into the bedding and down into the roof space.

Repointing replaces it with a flexible pointing compound that moves with the roof instead of fighting it. We cut and clean out the old pointing first, so the new compound is bonding to something solid rather than being smeared over the top of a failed one.

In detail

Why it matters more than it looks

The ridge and hip lines are the single longest run of joint on a tiled roof, and they sit at the highest and most exposed point of the building.

Sound pointing keeps water out of the bedding underneath. Once the bedding is wet and breaking down, you are no longer looking at a repoint, you are looking at a rebed, and the price moves accordingly.

It is a small job done at the right time and a much larger one done late. We will tell you which of the two you are looking at.

Roof repointing: your questions

Not covered here? Ring Aaron on 0427 149 270 and ask.

How do I know if my roof needs repointing?

Look in the gutters. Grit and crumbs of mortar are the giveaway. From the ground you may also see cracking or missing sections along the ridge line. We will confirm it properly with a free inspection.

Is repointing enough on its own?

Only if the bedding underneath is still sound. If the bed has broken down, repointing over the top of it is a cosmetic fix that will not last. We will tell you which one you need.

Does repointing come with a restoration?

Yes. Rebedding and repointing where needed are part of a full roof restoration, along with the clean, the repairs and the coating.
